Model Love: Malaika Firth - The New Face of Prada

 photo malaika-firth-tank-magazine_zps885e1290.jpg
I was reading Grazia and noticed a post about Prada's latest model, a gorgeous British and Kenyan Model called Malaika Firth. Incredibly, she is the first black model cast by Prada since Naomi Campbell in 1994. This little fact made me very ecstatic for Malaika, it is an incredible feat for the 19 year old who has previously worked with brands like Asos (I knew I recognised that face!).

Malaika's achievement also made me realise that I can't wait for the era when it becomes more common place to see more black faces, and indeed more women of 'color' front the campaigns of more high end brands. I hope I don't have too long to wait!

I love Malaika's look, although she looks incredibly cute, she still manages to have that edge that is a recognisable trait of the top models. She also seems quite down to earth as this interview with I-D reveals. Plus, I always have love for a fellow African doing well and can't wait to see what the future holds for her!

Model Love: Joan Smalls

Joan Smalls Joan Smalls Photobucket Joan Smalls Joan Smalls Joan Smalls Joan Smalls

I love Joan Smalls!

Currently the Number 1 model in the world according to models.com . She has worked for Gucci, Stella McCartney, Givenchy, Roberto Cavalli, Giambattista Valli, Chanel, Fendi, Calvin Klein among many many many other top designers. What I love most is the fact that she is recognised in the fashion industry for her hard work, poise and tenacity. She's been modelling since she was 19 but only blew up within the last two years. It goes to show that a lot can be said for patience and continued hard work!

I especially love her comment on diversity in the fashion industry -

"Some people think it's a challenge being diverse. You just have to remember who you are, where you're come from. And that's why you see me stomp and walk as hard as I can."

I think her comments are applicable to any industry, including mine! There are some things one cannot change, but as long as you do your best you can have that comfort that no one can question your handwork, drive or commitment! Its paid off for Joan right?
